Great Golf Trips: So Many Places, So Little Time

by S. Sayre on 06/01/2011

Young or old, scratch or slasher, 36 a day or 18 holes and a nap, it’s usually pretty hard to decide where to take your next golf trip. The good news is that it’s a lot of fun to think through and evaluate all your options.

As I’ve pointed out in the past, with a nice mix of compatible guys, you can have a terrific trip on more than 100 different golf trip itineraries.  With the wrong guys, you can’t have fun anywhere.

If you’re the golf captain, you have the levers of power.  Most of the guys you’re inviting are too busy with their day jobs, or distracted by priorities at home to think about climatology and stimpmeter speeds. Your first source of good info on where to take the group is to listen to your pals who have road-tested the destinations you have in mind. Of course, there are a few well-known stay ‘n play golf resorts where you are unlikely to go wrong — the only real issues become cost, weather and aerification schedules. If your idea is multiple stop touring, you need to research hotels and even restaurants in addition to putting together the golf itinerary. While the internet makes self-directed touring possible, there are a handful of very experienced golf tour operators out there who can make your life much easier, and eliminate unwanted surprises on or off the golf course.

Values are all around out there, even at some of the elite destinations like Pinehurst.  It’s a good time for a golf trip.

Wherever you end up going, I wish you smooth greens, sunny days, cold beverages and lots of laughs.
